A man was praised for telling the neighborhood about his "pervert" next door neighbor that was caught watching his wife tan nude in their backyard.
The Original Poster (OP), known as u/BoxHot5459, posted about the incident in Reddit's popular "Am I The A**hole" forum where it received more than 12,000 upvotes and 900 comments. The post can be found here.
In America, individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy within their own homes, vehicles, and offices, according to Law Shelf. This, however, would not include individuals using their front yard or parking their cars in a public lot since the expectation is that other people will pass by.
Two determine reasonable expectations of privacy, an area must follow two guidelines:
This would mean that public parks, front yards, parking lots, and other spaces that are highly frequented would not have any expectation of privacy. By this definition, this would also mean that a person has a right to privacy within their private yard or inside their home.
In the post titled "AITA telling people in our neighborhood about my neighbor spying on my wife?" the 30-year-old man said he and his wife, 28, recently moved into his grandparent's house.
The OP, who is an architect, said the house has a pool and that he and his wife did work on the house including a sliding lattice wall in the middle of the yard to provide ample privacy.
"For better explanation the neighbor in question is neighbor A and the other is B," the post read. "The pool is located in the back yard closer to neighbor B, so we decided to put a sliding lattice wall in the middle of our yard and recessed the pool area a bit."
He explained that his wife enjoys tanning and swimming topless and he wanted to ensure her privacy and "avoid snoopy neighbors."
Recently, the OP and his wife were in the pool drinking and watching television when she took off her top. He explained that they didn't do "anything explicit" and she barely got out of the pool before they went inside for bed.
"One of the neighbors told us that this was a 'family neighborhood' and that we will do better if we keep that in mind because neighbor A said that she saw us at night," the post read. "Odd, because she had to stand at the very end of her property, and because of her height, get on something."
But after arriving home from work a few days later, the OP said he found his wife having a discussion with a neighbor who said she caught her husband watching his wife for the second time.
"I cut the discussion short and sent them home, threatening to call the police if we caught the husband doing that," the post read. "I guess the lady wanted to spread the word before we did to save face, and told a few of our neighbors about my wife being indecent (leaving her husband out completely). So I went out of my way too."
The OP said whenever he sees her friends, he makes small talk and mentions his "nice lattice wall" and the "pervert husband" who went out of his way to "watch my poor wife at home."
"Needless to say they're being casted out for his behavior and my wife and I think it's funny but my family not so much," the post read. "So I was wondering if we're in the wrong."
More than 900 users commented on the post, many praising the OP for telling the neighborhood about his "peeping Tom" neighbor.
"1. it's your backyard," one user commented receiving more than 12,400 upvotes. "2. you have went above and beyond to make this area a safe space for your wife. 3. Your neighbor is most definitely a perv and deserves every snide remark he receives for his disgusting actions!"
"NTA. You installed privacy walls, and it is your property," another user commented. "If your wife wants to be topless there is absolutely no issue. If someone is going out of there way to spy on her, they are the ones in the wrong, and are a predator. It's good you're telling your neighbors, as they'd probably like to know they have a pervert living by them."
"Her husband is a perv, and instead of taking him to task for it, she's blaming the object of his unwanted attention," one commenter wrote. "Shame on both of them."
"In the privacy of your own back garden and he has been watching her, he is a peeping Tom," one user commented. "You should both be able to do as you please and it might be a family neighbourhood but unless the whole neighbourhood is watching, it doesn't mean a thing. Tell the woman to control her husband, he obviously has nothing better to do."
