This is going to be another one of those columns where I hit a subject, discuss it for a paragraph of two and then go on to the next. Hopefully, you find something of interest. If not, I’m sorry.
What a beautiful place. Anyone wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of real life and our electronic world, get there. It will change your perspective of life, at least for a few weeks. The peaceful isolation (as the Yuppers say, they’ve been practicing social distancing since 1837), the beauty of nature and the cooler summer temperatures has made this our ‘go-to’ destination probably for the next 10 summers. We stayed in a friend’s beautiful cabin in Paradise, located mighty close to Lake Superior.
Frequently, I see these ‘where have you visited’ Facebook surveys asking if you’ve been to places like Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower and places like this. I usually end up with a low number. Why? Give me a four-mile walk near a UP river or waterfall over those places any day. I’d rather go to those places versus the man-made landmarks those lists usually feature.
Two of our volleyball friends got married up north (not in the UP) last weekend. I’ve played on volleyball teams with Morgan and Brian in the past and consider them good friends. While they are about 20 years younger than most of our volleyball group — called Dirty Tuesday Volleyball Group (DTVG) – they have fit in quite well with our gang of about 40 people.
Our DTVG group happened to be hosting our annual weekend vacation up north (called Miller Camp) and guess who got married about 20 minutes from our site? Yes, Morgan and Brian. They told us to crash the reception, so, of course, we did. Okay, I don’t know how much we can consider it ‘crashing’ the reception since we were actually invited to do so, but it was really nice to experience their special day for at least awhile. Good luck you two crazy kids.
Favorite Facebook post of the week
This post was by my niece, who is experiencing the wonders of motherhood with two young kids. Apparently, there was a pretty interesting incident the other day when she made the following post.
“I didn’t think I’d be at the ER for a chocolate chip up Hudson’s nose today, but here I am.”
There you go, Hudson. I’ll definitely share this with one of his future girlfriends in about a decade.
The cost of a ball game
Just saw a survey that said the price to go to a Tiger game for a family of four with the purchase of four hot dogs, two beers, two beverages and parking is $158.76. Shockingly, this is on the low end of Major League ballparks. The same trip to Boston’s Fenway Park costs $324.37. This is another reason why I’d rather go to Toledo Mudhens’ games than Tiger games.
I used to play a lot of golf when I was in my late teens and early to mid-20s, but somehow stopped playing. I enjoyed playing, and while I’ve never really driven a golf ball for more than an average of 220 yards anytime in my life, I thought I was a reasonable player. Bogey golf was my par — I considered 45 my par on a par 36 nine-hole course.
But, life has changed. Now, I golf but once a year and usually do it at that Miller Camp I was talking about earlier. We do a Friday scramble, so it’s easy to remember your good shots and forget the bad ones — the bad shots that would make me shoot a 60 if I was keeping my actual score. But at this year’s scramble, I had my share of strong shots and had only about two worm-burner shots. Maybe, just maybe, if I started playing consistently again, I could become decent. Okay, let’s end that stupid fantasy now.
