Recent events on the show and in real life mean big changes for the titular family. Here's everything we know about The Goldbergs season ten.
Fans have been falling more and more in love with the dysfunctional, lovable Goldberg family for almost a decade now. The series is loosely based on the 1980s childhood of creator Adam F. Goldberg and is filled with constant references to the era. As a young boy, Goldberg often filmed family events, and his home videos are recreated in the show, with the originals being shown prior to the end credits of every episode. The Goldbergs balance clever jokes with interesting interpersonal drama, making audiences laugh and cry along with the Philadelphian family.
Those who have long been enjoying the exploits of the Goldbergs for years were elated to hear that the series would be returning for season ten, especially given all the changes to the family that was teased at the end of season nine. The upcoming episodes will put many characters in exciting situations. Here's everything we know about the soon-to-be-released tenth season of The Goldbergs.
Given the recently announced departure of actor Jeff Garlin from the series, the creators of The Goldbergs had to devise a way to explain the absence of the family's father figure. Ultimately, they opted to kill off the character. Murray's death happens sometime between the events of season nine and season ten, and promotional materials for the upcoming season have suggested that the Goldbergs will be grappling with this familial tragedy in early episodes.

Other characters on the show will have their own personal struggles to overcome while coping with the death of their father. The end of season nine saw Adam graduating from high school. When he inevitably goes off to college, his mother Beverly will likely struggle to adapt to her newly empty nest. Additionally, the season nine finale features the bombshell revealing that Erica is pregnant. Upcoming episodes will have to deal with both life and death, raising the stakes of the generally low-consequence series to levels that have not yet been seen.
Additionally, fans can likely expect season ten to feature cameos from recognizable '80s faces, as drop-ins from nostalgia-inducing individuals have long been a staple of the series. For example, in the sixth episode of season nine, "The Hunt for the Great Albino Pumpkin," actor Cassandra Peterson made an appearance as her most iconic character, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Who exactly could appear is as of yet unknown.
A family drama is only as good as the actors cast as said family, and the titular Goldbergs are all portrayed by talented individuals. In season ten, almost every single actor will be returning to the fold. Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids, What to Expect When You're Expecting) will return as the family's harried, oftentimes over-zealous matriarch Beverly Goldberg. Sean Giambrone (Solar Opposites, Kim Possible) returns as the series' main character, the awkward yet lovable Adam Goldberg. Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) plays an unseen adult version of Adam who functions as the show's narrator. Troy Gentile (Drillbit Taylor, Hotel for Dogs) returns as Barry Goldberg, the delightfully goofy middle Goldberg child. Hayley Orrantia (God's Not Dead 2, Christmas is Canceled) is back as Erica Goldberg, the intelligent and obstinate oldest sibling. And Geoff Schwartz (Truth or Dare, The Gray Man) is back as Sam Lerner, a long-time family friend of the Goldberg's and Erica's on-again, off-again romantic interest turned spouse.

However, as previously mentioned, season ten will not feature one of the most prominent characters in the series, Jeff Garlin's (Curb Your Enthusiasm, WALL-E) Murray Goldberg. The actor was the subject of an HR investigation following several misconduct allegations. Garlin and the production team ultimately came to the mutual decision that he would leave the show. In recent years, holding high-profile individuals accountable for problematic behaviors has become a major focus in the entertainment industry. Though the decision to remove Garlin was necessary, it will definitely leave a hole in the titular family.
The first episode of The Goldbergs season is set to premiere on September 21, 2022. The season premiere will bear the title "If You Build It." This is a reference to the '80s baseball film Field of Dreams, so fans can likely expect that the episode will tackle themes comparable to the family-focused drama.
The creators of The Goldbergs have had to make many difficult decisions recently. They've been forced to sever ties with a problematic series regular, and on the creative side of things, it was likely a challenge to craft a season wherein the main characters are all going through major life changes. Though the show has long been putting out comfortable, familiar content for its die-hard fans, change is generally a good thing, and it will be exciting to see this undoubtedly unique season unfold.
