Spinal Tap II is happening

Cannes Hot Package: ‘Spinal Tap II’ On Tap As Rob Reiner, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest & Harry Shearer Back For Encore

maybe if it goes to 12?

Guest’s mockumentaries have slid downhill (overall) over the years. Mighty Wind was ok at best, and For Your Consideration was not good at all. Just noticed there is something called Mascots released after that…I’m not even interested.

You’re not interested in Spinal Tap 2 cause Guest made crappy movies on his own? I have faith in Reiner making a worthy sequel although the bar is set very high.

It’s been diminishing returns from the start. Thankfully, some were still great, but IIRC “Best In Show” was the last great one. And to be honest, “Waiting For Guffman” isn’t as good as advertised.

I’m not sure any of those were really that great, I mean Best In Show was fine but Spinal Tap is such a great movie. When deadpan humor makes you laugh out loud that’s rare.

Best In Show I rank #2. The snark was amazing.

But not “Lick My Love Pump” level brilliant

Might have to watch The Right Stuff and Tremors this weekend. Maybe throw in Miami Blues as well. RIP Fred Ward.

The Right Stuff is one of my all-time favorite movies…

The ‘Right Stuff’ makes me think of ‘All the Right Moves’ with Tom Cruise… might to try to find it tonight on the Roku.

Not a Tom Cruise fan or not a ‘All the Right Moves’ fan?

When I think of Fred Ward movies The Right Stuff is the first one that comes to mind…like Jup it’s one of my all time favorites both because of the content but also just the feel of the movie…just love it!  The other two movies that come to mind immediately is Uncommon Valor, one of my dad’s all time favs, and also Tremors.

How could I forget about Remo Williams?! This weekend’s TV watching schedule is really filling up.

Crazy Heart (Netflix disc): A faded country music musician is forced to reassess his dysfunctional life during a doomed romance that also inspires him.

Finally got around to seeing this. When it first came out, and this is in hindsight, I don’t think I’d have appreciated it as much. However, a couple friends have brought this one up over the years, and it came up on my queue, so I dove in. It IS formulaic at times, but enough slight twists in there to keep it from being cheese. I really liked it, very much worth a watch. And who’d figure that Colin Farrell could pull off a country (well, “new” country) singer? That sure was a diamond in the rough.

“Crazy Heart” is a totally different type of movie compared to “Hell or High Water”but Jeff Bridges absolutely CRUSHES IT (in both) 👍

Let’s try this again. Hell Or High Water is awesome, and let’s roll this scene again. Classic. :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdYXQ-IPZcc&ab_channel=AcademyAwardClips

Collin Ferrell single-handedly ruined En Bruges.

We watched Senior Year and it was funnier and less “stupid in a bad way” than I would have imagined based upon the trailer.  Rotten Tomatoes has savaged it apparently but all 3 of us laughed regularly.

Because the adventure began but never continued……

This is pretty much spot on. It was silly-stupid, not stupid-stupid. There were some dashes of “Not Another Teen Movie,” obviously some “Bring It On,” and a bit of “Never Been Kissed,” although I have not seen that last one, I just know of the plot.

It’s a decent afternoon-killer. Short and sweet, it’ll give ya some chuckles.

I loved En Bruges, went there a few years after and loved the city too

The “c” quote is amazing quote, but other than that…

Hyena Road (Netflix streaming): Three different men, three different worlds, three different wars – all stand at the intersection of modern warfare – a murky world of fluid morality where all is not as it seems.

This is a cold movie. There is little drama, little action (until the end scenes), and little room for the feelings. This is point blank, a war movie. The stuff you DON’T see in a war. This is also why I liked it. Here is what it is, deal with it. Lots of acronyms, shorthand, etc, not a ton of shooting and the like. I do recommend this one.

Red Sea Diving Resort (Netflix streaming): Israel’s Mossad agents attempt to rescue Ethiopian Jewish refugees in Sudan in 1979.

Didn’t seem to take a LOT of liberties, reading up on it, quite a good movie, although the ending was very predictable. It was a story I did not know about, so that was a plus. I will say, that is one crazy idea to do what they did, HOW they did it. And it has Ben Kingsley, so that was a factor.

Kidnapping Stella (Netflix streaming): Snatched off the street and held for ransom, a bound and gagged woman uses her limited powers to derail her two masked abductors’ carefully-laid plans.

Beyond cookie-cutter. Heck, in the first 15 minutes of the movie or so, the foreshadowing is so obvious that even Anne Frank would’ve seen it. Add to that simple rookie criminal mistakes and general idiocy, I wouldn’t bother with this one.

The Takedown (Netflix streaming, French movie): Diakité and Monge as police officers who are the complete opposite, and get paired together to uncover an unexpectedly big criminal case.

A combo of Lethal Weapon and Rush Hour, IMO. It was…entertaining enough. LOTS of racial dialogue/populist dialogue. This movie was not shy about it. It kind of took away from the main plot, IMO. Overall, I think they could’ve dialed it back a little on everything, it is rather in your face at times, but that could also be a cultural difference. Good action sequences with fights and a couple decent car chases. Worth a go, if only to satisfy curiosity.

Bus 174 (Netflix disc): On June 12, 2000, a young man with a gun took the passengers aboard Bus 174 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil hostage. This documentary examines the event itself, the resulting media frenzy, the police response, and the perpetrator’s background.

Documentary, a LOT of real footage, along with interviews and context around the hijacker and the way of life for the “street kids” in Brazil. A lot of missed opportunities/bad calls by the police during the situation, and unless you know the story already, you really don’t know how it’s going to end. I thought it was very good, very much “here’s what happened” without a lot of bias, because the movie presents as many angles as it can, with the interviewees.

I would recommend this, because it shows, in depth, the moment-by-moment decisions that goes into these situations; everyone from the hostages to the hijacker to the police to the higher ups in government.

This link is for a Nat Geo special about a bus hostage situation that happened in Manila in (I think) 2011 in which a whole of of stupid and tragedy happened.  https://vimeo.com/57690855

What We Started (Netflix streaming): DJs, producers, and promoters discuss the history and state of electronic dance music.

I went back and forth on this as I watched it. EDM is just another name for techno, but with a bit of “nose in the air” attitude. They do explore what is considered a DJ, as in a pre-made USB playing performer vs a DJ mixing the albums as the performance goes on. I favor the latter stance with heavy bias. It’s a good doc, and it sways from one side of the argument to the other, and it’s a big sway, but it is fair.

If you don’t like this music, it’s a coin flip on whether I recommend it to you or not. If you do like this music, then it’s an easy “Yeah, need to see this.”

Not a fan of sequels, but I might break my streak of not going to a movie theater and go see ‘Maverick’.

I have Tue off, so may consider it, depending on movie prices. I’ve score some good deals on the first showings of the day.

Back in the days (late 90’s/early 2000’s) when I would go to movies.  I worked nights at the hospital and on the mornings of going into my weekend off or the morning coming off my weekend to work. I would always go to the MOA for the early morning shows. Back when they would let you squirt you own butter on your popcorn… lol!!!

West End in St Louis Park usually had good deals on Sun morn, 10am or so showings. IIRC, saw that last Star Wars, opening weekend, for about $5-$6. Obviously, little to no one in the theater besides me. Perfect! Have gone that route for a few movies there.

I also miss the $1 theaters.  Where you could go and see a movie after it came out for a while for $1.  There was one in Apple Valley, and I forget where the other ne was at.  Maybe Hopkins or Roseville.  It’s been 20 plus years so my memory fades.

Hopkins had one. Permanently closed, the pandemic killed it. Going to be mixed apt/retail is the current rumor.

Highland was for many years – now back to first run IIRC

Roseville for many years – Gone, I think Cub (on Larpenteur between Hamline & Lexington) expanded into their location

Plaza – near Aldrich – was a dump and no idea if it’s still there.

Dock Cinema in Excelsior was a $1 for a while.  It was closed last time I was home but my dad said they want to reopen.  I hope so because it’s a great location and very historic.

Plaza – near Aldrich – was a dump and no idea if it’s still there.

It’s still there, but hasn’t been open since Covid started. I’ve guessed they planned on reopening as they’ve been putting movie quotes on the marquee and changing about every two weeks. Not so sure now as the latest quote (the “hope is the best of things” from Shawshank) has been up for about two months now.

There was one in Apple Valley. It is now a charter school

That one kinda hit me. Watched the first half of Goodfellas tonight, in honor of him.

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.

ray liotta from movie goodfellas…One of my favorite actors, he also played Jonny Depp’s Dad in the movie “Blow” Has a nice role in Cop Land too (among many others!) RIP Ray ☝️

The Operative (Netflix Streaming): A woman is recruited by the Mossad to work undercover in Tehran.

Diane Kruger (Joyeux Noel, Inglourious Basterds, and quite a few other credits) is great as the agent in question. As is usual in a spy movie, there are twists and turns, and in the case of working assignments as a white woman involving Iran, Israel, and such…it gets a little trickier. I really liked the movie, except maybe the ending. There’s another possible twist in there, if you watch closely. That’s all I can say about that part. :)

Licorice Pizza (Netflix disc): The story of Alana Kane and Gary Valentine growing up, running around and going through the treacherous navigation of first love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973.

The trouble is, he’s 15, and she’s 25. ;) I will say, you see a John Hughes movie, you KNOW it’s a John Hughes movie. This movie is definitely a Paul Thomas Anderson movie, bordering on a Wes Anderson movie. I will also say if Forrest Gump perfected the  “best friend likes a girl” theme, which I think it did, this movie copies it HARD. That being said, it was good, had all the awkwardness, the “C’mon, Man!” moments, the revelation moments, etc. It was a well-told story. Quirky, yet watchable. Give it a try. You might like it.

Top Gun: Maverick was outstanding.  It’s also refreshing to see something made for a theater experience that’s not a superhero movie.

Agree, Maverick is outstanding! And for those of us (old enough) to have (first) seen Top Gun in a theatre in 1986…VERY nostalgic! 👍🇺🇸👍

I am glad I did not go to the theaters for  The Batman, picked it up from Red Box, I guess I liked The Dark Knight to much and expected to much

but The Batman I thought was over rated

If Maverick doesn’t have at least a nod to the following sequence of quotes, I will be slightly disappointed, as I think this was such a great scene/exchange of words. Rather underrated:

Carole: Hey, Goose, you big stuuuuuud!

Goose: That’s me, honey.

Carole: Take me to bed or lose me forever.

Goose: Show me the way home, honey!

Yes (without giving away spoilers) there is a nod to that particular scene in Maverick. I’d recommend you not wait this one out, this needs to be seen in a theatre to get the full effect.

I’ll also opine that Jennifer Connelly as “Penny Benjamin” adds a nice touch to the storyline.

From the trailer it appears the new top gun movie is just an updated version of the original.  Would those who have seen it say that’s accurate, or is that just the glimpse we get in the trailer?

That’s a hard question to answer without giving away spoilers. I’ll just say there are more layers to Maverick than Top Gun & the thrust of the storyline is somewhat more intricate in Maverick. But…if you liked the original, you’ll like Maverick…if you didn’t, you probably won’t. This movie did a good job blending the non flying  segments (in a movie about fighter pilots) with the action sequences. But that’s just my opinion….😉

Top Gun: Maverick rented the fight jets for $11,374 an hour.

Many will miss this one.

I know what’s up with that reference. :) Which solves a riddle of sorts from the first movie: WHO WAS IT? :D

Earth And Blood (Netflix streaming): Saïd owns a sawmill deep in the woods, which he decides to sell. Little does he know that one of his apprentices was cornered by his brother and forced to hide a large amount of cocaine inside the factory.

French movie, and frankly, I don’t even know why they bothered with the subplots. They meant NOTHING to the main plot. It is pretty much a trainwreck of a movie. I had an inkling of that, given that it was about 80 minutes long, but, hey, had to give it a try. Whoops.

I watched American Underdog, which is basically the Kurt Warner story.  Once again Hollywood takes what is a good story and over-dramatized it.  Also, once again, Hollywood makes Iowa look like nothing but wheat fields.

Having the Iowa Barnstormers practice in a field surrounded by hay bales and then having a rodeo arena connected to Vets Auditorium where they played are two of the biggest jokes in the entire movie.  It’s no wonder why the rest of the US thinks Iowa is a joke but for the life of me I will never understand why Hollywood loves to pigeon hole the optic of the state of Iowa in its movies.  How is it that “Take This Job and Shove It” is about the only movie that show Iowa how it really is.

I wonder why even Kurt Warner endorsed this movie when they overblown his story.   I get it, it’s Hollywood and this is what they do.  Like I said Kurt Warner’s story has plenty of drama if it was shown like it happened.  This movie movie just made it feel like one of those Hallmark over the top type of flicks.

If you have a chance…skip this movie.

My wife is from a small town in Iowa.  We go back to visit frequently, so I’ve spent my share of time there.  I’d say “The Straight Story” is a pretty accurate representation of Iowa.

The movie is still Kurt’s story. Yeah, they take some Hollywood liberties, but most people who watch the movie realize that (the running out of gas on a cold winter day in the middle of Tim-Buck-2 with his family in the car scene) was clearly unnecessary….I get that along with the scenes you mentioned. But at it’s core, the movie is about Kurt’s perseverance & Brenda believing in him & Kurt overcoming long odds & Dick  Vermeil believing in him. Based on that, it’s at least worth watching on Netflix or DVD in my view.

I remember when Trent Green went down, and Warner was named starter for the Rams. I was a season ticket holder for the MN Fighting Pike, and had seen Warner play in the IA/MN game…I told my friends that the Rams would be just fine. Did I expect that LEVEL of success? No. But I knew Warner was NO slouch.

Sorry To Bother You (Netflix streaming): In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a universe of greed.

Satire movie, it could have been SO good, but instead of subtle-ish cues here and there, or some snark (think “Thank You For Not Smoking”), it hits you over the head with obviousness and straight out over-the-top WTF silliness. It’s a combo of that movie, “Office Space,” and a touch of “Idiocracy.” By the time I decided I didn’t care for it much, I was already 2/3 into it, and just wanted to see how it ended. Those who play/have played poker call that “pot-committed.” I had to watch it until the end, at that point.

My wife is from a small town in Iowa.  We go back to visit frequently, so I’ve spent my share of time there.  I’d say “The Straight Story” is a pretty accurate representation of Iowa.

The straight story was partially filmed in my wife’s hometown of Clermont.  The lawn mower from the movie is on display in a building there yet.  I would agree that the movie is a good representation of Iowa except the mechanic from the John Deere shop, that is a bit over the top.

Disappearance At Clifton Hill (Netflix streaming): Follows a troubled young woman returning to her hometown of Niagara Falls, where the memory of a long-ago kidnapping quickly ensnares her.

Nicely layered, complex main character. The ending was…kind of “AUGH! Really?” but in a good way. The audience finds out clues as the main characters do, which I like. There’s no “How do you NOT see this” when the audience is clued into such things. 100 minutes, so nice and tight, but the story doesn’t move quickly. It’s meticulous. I’d recommend watching this.

The Protege (Amazon Prime): Rescued as a child by the legendary assassin Moody, Anna is the world’s most skilled contract killer. However, when Moody is brutally killed, she vows revenge for the man who taught her everything she knows.

Decent action movie, some twists, of course, and the ending…still processing that one, unsure if I like it or not, and that may be the point. Sam L, Maggie Q, and Michael Keaton are all excellent in it, and I have to say, that’s a decent starring cast. It’s not on my “buy the DVD” list, but I’d probably watch it again.

The Unjust (Netflix streaming, Korean w/subtitles): When the most probable serial killer suspect dies and the case looks like it’s reached a dead end, police brass decide to create a killer – and anyone will do.

First off, while I don’t speak or read ANY Korean, the subtitles are off at times, it’s that obvious in translation/context, but one will get the idea. That being said, really good movie, intersecting plot lines, double-crossing, etc, like any other American cop drama of this sort. Secondly, the mental games/etc are above par, how everyone thinks 2-3 steps ahead and how to make the next move. Definitely worth a watch.

Run All Night (Netflix disc): Mobster and hit man Jimmy Conlon has one night to figure out where his loyalties lie: with his estranged son, Mike, whose life is in danger, or his longtime best friend, mob boss Shawn Maguire, who wants Mike to pay for the death of his own son.

It’s a Liam Neeson action/drama. For the most part, you can take it from there. It does also star Ed Harris, Vincent D’Onofrio, and a few “Oh, That Guy!” actors. It was okay. Good story about career choices and personal choices and that weird gray area that lives between the two. I would rank it as a good time-killer. One wouldn’t go out of their way to watch it, but one wouldn’t shut it off.

Riot (Netflix streaming): Cop Jack Stone robs a Russian mob bank to end in the same prison as the mob boss killing Jack’s wife. An inmate helps him as does a reporter. Lots of fights.

Has Dolph in it, and he’s not the star. Chuck Liddell (MMA) is one of the main co-stars. Just sayin’. The last sentence in the summary describes the movie, almost to a T. Over-choreographed fights, the story really doesn’t matter. It’s action, baby!  Entertaining enough, but turn your brain off for this one. 90 minutes of cage-fighting. In a prison. With a weak attempt at drama.
